Historic(al) Moments

I got a degree in Political Science but I’m probably one of the people least engaged in what’s going on within the United States.  I watched the inaugural address while on my lunch break and later that day talked to my sister about the significance of the event.  She’s a schoolteacher in Florida and since race is a divisive issue in her district, showing the inauguration coverage to students was not mandatory.  She did show the coverage to her classes and found the event was one of the most engaging for them, and prompted many questions.  It was also an opportunity to educate her students about a bit of our nation’s history.

I’ve looked back on my 30 years and there are a few events that stand out to me as historical moments:

  • Space shuttle Challenger explosion
  • Fall of Berlin Wall
  • Collapse of USSR/CCCP
  • Inauguration of Barack Obama

There have also been many technology advances.  Perhaps they’re not as important as automobiles or television, but I think when this era is looked back upon they will be:

  • Mobile phones and PDAs
  • Broadband internet access
  • Laptop computers
  • DVRs

What historical moments do you remember?  What would you add to the technology list?
