What’s in a Name?

The past few days, while listening to NPR, I’ve been hearing about opposition to the use of the word retard. I’ve never thought of the word as particularly offensive. Even when I hear the term used in an insulting context, I still think of the word by its original definition: to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

I don’t think we’re really getting at the issue when we attempt to change the language we use because certain words and phrases have been leveraged in a negative context. We really need to get at the root of what causes people to use disparaging terms and find out how to alter their thinking. If we simply take words out of common parlance, they’ll just be replaced by something else. Which term is worse, retard or glass-licker?

I cringe every time I hear any derogatory term. It’s even harder to admit I’ve been guilty of using them in the past. We all have our biases and fears of the unknown. Rather than wasting time trying to change our language, why not spend some time trying to educate us and help us alter our viewpoints?

Let’s have an open an honest discourse. If we talk about racism, classism, sexism, etc. with open hearts and minds won’t we all be better for it?

Random Fandom

One day over lunch, some coworkers and I were discussing sports fanatics. For me, soxgal is an identity derived from my love of the Boston Red Sox. Even though I don’t play baseball and don’t have an ownership interest in the team, I always talk about the Red Sox in the possessive. my Red Sox. my boys. my team. The love I have for the Sox has grown over the years. It’s a finely cultivated passion, with baseball cards, newspaper clippings, hats, shirts and other logo items to make up the shrine I have to the boys of summer. There’s no need for Red Sox Pez dispensers or temporary tattoos but I have both.

Baseball isn’t the only thing I’ve been fanatic about. During my youth I had rather unhealthy obsessions with Back to the Future, Disney’s Aladdin and Star Trek. My collections cost a small fortune and today may be worth a few pennies. If I’m interested in something and decide I want to get into it, I really get involved.

What spurs fanaticism? What is it that drives this desire to know everything and to be involved in everything about a single topic? There’s a difference between liking something and having a fanatic’s attraction. Where is that trigger in our brains that switches us from casual interest to obsessive compulsion?

What are you fanatic about?

A New Beginning

Hi, my name is Sally and I’m an internet addict.  Writing has always been my therapy of choice and soxgal.net will be another outlet for all of the ideas jumbled in my head.  I likely will NOT have a singular focus and you may find entries about parenthood, gaming, literature, education, baseball, science-fiction, technology, social media or other varied topics.

Freedom of information and the free exchange of ideas is a wonderful thing.  I promise I won’t hold anything back.  I’m looking for ongoing dialogue, a conversation, even a heated debate.  Join me in exploration of our ever-changing world.
